Genital Jousting is as much a way for us to explore our own feelings about sexuality as we hope it is for our players. We're just a bunch of default white dudes with a passing interest in sticking things in our butts. We, the developers, largely fall into this same demographic. And perhaps more pertinently, that often means someone who grew up in a sexually repressive (or at the very least, conservative) environment.Īka: us. And for the most part that probably means someone who identifies as a cisgendered heterosexual male. It’s the same demographic as Broforce, it’s the median Steam player, it’s the people who love dick jokes. While we're definitely putting things into the game in the hopes that it might appeal to a broader range of people (for example women and queer folk), we have no misconceptions about who our major audience is. By making the content of the game appear softer, we hope that penises can be viewed as approachable, not just tools, or worse, weapons. The colourful art style, the doll-like clothes, the lullaby music - all of these things are done in the name of presenting an alternate view of masculinity. We like to think of dicks as lovable and laughable. It’s a game where two quivering cocks can go on a date, eat spaghetti, and fall in love. On the contrary, Genital Jousting is also meant to be a loving homage to the penis. That isn’t to say that we want to portray penises (and by extension - masculinity) in a purely negative manner. We want to present the phallus as something silly, abject, and non-threatening. But in Genital Jousting, they are often the butt of the joke. They are considered the dominant sexual organ. In a patriarchal society, penises are associated with power. Genital Jousting is largely about disarming masculinity. We have feelings to explore, and things to say, and by wrapping them in a big joke, we're hoping to sneak some of our ideas past the watchful gaze of unsuspecting cis-het dudes. Free Lives does not pretend to be above a fart joke.īut we like to think of the game as a trojan horse - a way to deliver a sex positive message to an audience that might never get to hear it otherwise. We're talking lowest common denominator humour at its finest. It's a comedy game, and a lot of the design is simply informed by what we think is funny, ridiculous or gross. IMPORTANT? VALUABLE? BUT ISN'T GENITAL JOUSTING JUST A BIG JOKE? If you're somehow still not convinced by this incredibly compelling argument then please allow me to spend several more paragraphs rambling about what we're trying to make, why we're trying to make it, and whether or not we're screwing it up. This can cause glitches in lighting and the worst-case scenario, damage your bulbs. If the voltage that reaches them keeps changing when you use the dimming feature, the bulbs may not receive enough power to function. However, this feature in the switches can clash with the bulbs.Īs we mentioned before, the bulbs need a constant amount of electricity to flow through them. The dimming feature works by lowering the voltage that reaches the bulbs until you reach your desired lighting. However, some smart switches don’t come with this built-in feature, so that’ll bring us back to one of the hacks we mentioned before as a reminder to keep the switches turned on at all times.Īnother fun feature in smart switches is the dimming option that allows you to play with your light’s intensity. That way, you won’t have to worry about remembering to keep the switch on, and you’ll be able to turn your lights on and off using your app or voice command freely even if the switch is turned off. A lot of them have a built-in support feature that allows you to turn your switch on and off physically, while still supplying the bulbs with their needed amount of electricity. Most of the new smart switches work smoothly with smart bulbs. Related Reading: Does Lutron Caseta Support Philips Hue Yet? Smart Bulbs and Smart Switchesīy now, you’re probably wondering, are smart switches the better fit for your smart bulbs? Well, the answer is it depends on the switch you invest in. They serve as a good reminder not to turn off the switches while looking more fancy and elegant than tape, or sticky notes.Īnd while both solutions do the trick, some people feel like it’s a bit of a hassle to have to do that with every light switch, so they turn to smart switches instead. They can either be magnetic covers, or screw-in covers. Other people prefer a better-looking alternative and invest in light switch covers. Some people like to hang a sticky note on their switches or put tape over them as a reminder not to turn them off. However, if you switch off your regular switch, you’ll cut off the electricity supply of the bulbs, and they won’t respond to your commands and will of course miss any scheduled timings you’ve prepared beforehand. Similarly in the case of the bulbs, if you turn them off using your mobile app or voice activation, you can turn them on again later. It’s not fully on, but it can still respond to your commands through the remote. Some people don’t realize this, but your smart bulb will need electricity flowing through it 24/7.Įven if it’s turned off, it’s still consuming very little electricity. In order to keep smart bulbs working with regular switches, you have to keep your light switch on. Their installed radio waves allow them to connect to the nearest Wi-Fi or ZigBee point, and become connected to your smart home system: Related Reading: Can Smart Bulbs Help Plants To Grow?Īs for smart switches, they look the same as your good old regular light switches, but they offer quite a bit of option. I personally find this feature a fun one to have because having the lights move in sync with music can definitely be a great mood setter for me.Īnother fun fact is that there are newly released versions of the bulbs that come with their own built-in speakers, motion detection sensors, and even security built-in cameras. You can connect them to your speakers and have them synced with the music as well. You won’t have to worry about oversleeping for example, because the scheduled lights will help your alarm wake you up. You also have the option to schedule them to turn the lights on and off at specific times, which can be very convenient. So whether you’re hosting the weekend party at your place or having a lowkey movie night, these bulbs will offer you colors from bright pink to your usual calm yellow. You can dim your bulbs and change their colors according to your mood. Through ZigBee, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity, smart bulbs can be controlled remotely through mobile apps, your smart home automation hub, or even voice activation, and allow you to play with your lighting in various ways. Ī recipe labelled "dow nuts", again from Hertfordshire, was found in a book of recipes and domestic tips written around 1800, by the wife of Baron Thomas Dimsdale, the recipe being given to the dowager Baroness by an acquaintance who transcribed for her the cooking instructions for a "dow nut". Ī recipe for fried dough "nuts" was published, in 1750 England, under the title "How to make Hertfordshire Cakes, Nuts and Pincushions”, in The Country Housewife’s Family Companion by William Ellis. These doughnuts closely resembled later ones but did not yet have their current ring shape. ĭutch settlers brought olykoek ("oil(y) cake") to New York (or New Amsterdam) in the early 18th century. Doughnuts are often accompanied by coffee or milk. Doughnut varieties are also divided into cake (including the old-fashioned) and yeast-risen doughnuts. Other shapes include balls, flattened spheres, twists, and other forms. Once fried, doughnuts may be glazed with a sugar icing, spread with icing or chocolate, or topped with powdered sugar, cinnamon, sprinkles or fruit. Small pieces of dough are sometimes cooked as doughnut holes. The two most common types are the ring doughnut and the filled doughnut, which is injected with fruit preserves (the jelly doughnut), cream, custard, or other sweet fillings. Doughnuts may also include water, leavening, eggs, milk, sugar, oil, shortening, and natural or artificial flavors. We can choose up to four turrets and traps, and we can switch them up for the occasion. One of the nice touches of Dwerve, is that we have access to a crafting table before each major fight. by the end, we have access to tens of different turrets and traps, and each of them have their uses in certain situations. We get more gems, new turrets and traps, and even upgrade our turrets as we progress through the game. We should navigate through enemies that overwhelm us, collect the gems from destroyed turrets in the quickest way possible, and set up a new line of defense before we are surrounded. The very mechanic of destroying and recalling turrets becomes an essential part of gameplay in harder parts of Dwerve. We have a limited amount of gems that allows us to place turrets and traps, and we get the gems back when they are destroyed or when we decide to recall them. We have to use the environment design to our advantage, and place turrets in strategic locations. In each new combat section, enemies spawn from small huts. The way the combat works is pretty simple. Aerie, our small furry friend keeps us company on our journey, and chimes in from time to time to confidently assure us! The design lends itself to the gameplay seamlessly through environmental hazards such as poisonous cloud in the the caves full of mushrooms, lava and fire in the volcano-like sections of the game, and interactable and breakable obstacles to help us in the tower defense gameplay. We face numerous NPCs and enemies with memorable character designs, and each level has a distinct color palette and environmental design. The pixel art style and the top-down view compliments the RPG feel of the game. Even though some plot hooks are cliches of the fantasy genre, they are well written, and the final moments of the game actually made me a bit teary eyed.ĭwerve looks great. This is the first thing that we usually don’t see in tower defense games a deep and quality story with various characters. From the young protagonist Dwerve and his talking pet feline, Aerie, to good-hearted trolls that help us on our mission, to giant turtles obsessed with turning weeds and flowers into wigs, Dwerve keeps introducing us to a slew of fun and serious characters along the way. The game is filled with memorable and adorable characters. We meet friendly characters along the way that help us in our journey and get stronger and more resourceful as we help those we come across. The story is a classic heroic fantasy tale with RPG elements. Allowing us to build turrets to defend ourselves in combat.īut a young hero by the name of Dwerve takes up arms in the form of his tools and the ancient knowledge of turret making passed down by his grandfather, to go invade the trolls’ base and find out more about the elixir that let them survive under sunlight, and disrupt their attacks. Esben, our sweet grandfather, teaches us the ancient arts of warsmithing. But their towns and villages wouldn’t stay safe forever, as the trolls find a way to conquer their weakness to sunlight, and roam the open fields to rein more destruction upon the world. The dwarven kingdom has been forced out of their home in the mountains by an army of trolls years ago, and they have taken up living in the nearby hills. Developed by Half Human Games and published by Electronic Sheep Games, Dwerve is filled with new additions to the genre, and it works wonderfully.ĭwerve takes place in a Tolkein-esque world, where we play as the young dwarf, Dwerve. You get to explore the world, invade the enemy’s base yourself, solve puzzles, and experience a sweet story on your way. Special Note: Kickstarter recently disabled remote embedding for images on project pages, so embedding code doesn't work on project pages (yet) - just everywhere else.Dwerve on the other hand breaks one of the most fundamental rules of the tower defense genre you no longer stay and defend your base against waves of enemies. We can even add a poster frame for a video so as a browser downloads a video, it can display an image that represents the video itself. Although I'd personally leave out Autoplay and Loop, as a kindness to my visitors, having a video play by itself is jarring enough, to have it loop is cruel. And all you need to do to include those enhancements, is to list them in the video element. And we can set the video to loop if need be. We can set the video to play as soon as it's ready. One, we can choose to show the video controls to the user. Now that we've linked to our video files, it's also worth noting that the video element allows us to add some enhancements to the video player. And if a browser needs help to determine which codec to use to play the video, we should pass along that information as well through the type attribute within the source element. Like we have to set a type attribute for CSS files as type equals text/css, to tell the browser we're looking to a CSS file, we need to tell the browser what kind of video file is being pulled. And just in case the server we're hosting our pages on isn't set up to deliver the video files correctly, we need to set a MIME type. So we can have greater native support for our videos. Thankfully, the video element allows us to cite multiple video files through source elements that can be nested within the video element itself. And Apple and Microsoft pay fees for H.264 Codec. Firefox and Opera tend to support free, and open source formats. One, there's intellectual property and licensing fees involved, in order to play certain codecs, and browser vendors need to pay for certain codecs to put it into the browser. Why don't we have one video file for all browsers to support? Well, it's not that easy. It's a royalty-free, VP8 codec that's being developed by Google. It's a container format for the open source Theora codec. Most frequently used and proprietary H.264 codec, which is what Blu-ray discs use. MP4, it's a container format for a number of different video encoding standards called codecs. Between an Mpeg and Ogg Theora file tough we can cover a fairly wide number of site visitors. However, different browsers support different video file formats. And native video support in browsers is fairly solid. And it's easy to provide a fallback, like a link to a video file itself in case a browser doesn't support native video. Aside from not needing the Flash plugin to get the video into our web pages, it's straightforward to call a video file with an HTML5 element called, you guessed it, Video. While embedding Flash video is still an option today, native HTML5 video is growing in popularity. So back in the day, putting video into a web page was all about using embed and object tags, to get Flash video into pages. |
